According to the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), approximately 15,000 Nigerian children died from AIDS-related illnesses in 2023.
This is a concerning statistic, especially considering that Nigeria contributes significantly to the global HIV burden, accounting for 25% of global mother-to-child transmission.
The Director-General of NACA, Dr. Temitope Ilori, emphasized the need to end stigmatization against persons living with HIV and urged them to access care, maintain their treatment, and continue with their medication to suppress the viral load.
Additionally, NACA reported that an estimated 2 million Nigerians are living with HIV, with children making up a significant and vulnerable segment of this population.
