“2024 Deadliest Year for Journalists: 124 Killed Worldwide, Says CPJ”

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has reported a devastating 22% increase in journalist fatalities worldwide in 2024, with at least 124 media workers killed while doing their job. This makes 2024 the deadliest year for journalists on record.

The Israel-Hamas conflict in the Middle East accounted for the majority of these deaths, with 85 journalists killed, 82 of whom were Palestinians. Other countries with high numbers of journalist killings include Sudan and Pakistan, with six deaths each, largely due to ongoing civil wars and political unrest.

Deadliest Regions and Countries:

  •  Middle East and North Africa: Accounted for 78% (97) of all journalist deaths worldwide
  •  Gaza: 85 journalist deaths, with 82 of those killed being Palestinians
  •  Sudan and Pakistan: Six journalist deaths each
  •  Mexico: Five journalist killings, maintaining its reputation as one of the most dangerous places for media professionals
  •  Haiti: Two journalist murders, with criminal groups openly claiming responsibility

The CPJ has called for greater protection for journalists, including the creation of an international investigative task force to address crimes against journalists and ensure accountability. Unfortunately, the trend of violence against journalists has continued into 2025, with six journalists already killed in the first weeks of the year.
