Over 53% of electricity customers in Nigeria, approximately 7.2 million out of 13.3 million registered customers, still don’t have meters, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). This was revealed in the NERC’s third-quarter report for 2024.¹
Here’s a breakdown of the metering situation in Nigeria:
- Metered customers: 6,156,726 (46.15% of total customers)
- Unmetered customers: 7,182,909 (53.85% of total customers)
The NERC also reported a significant increase in meter installations during the third quarter of 2024, with 184,507 customers metered across all distribution companies (DisCos). Ikeja, Ibadan, and Abuja DisCos recorded the highest number of meter installations.
To address the issue of estimated billing, the federal government has procured 1.8 million meters, with the first batch expected to arrive in December 2024 and the final batch by the second quarter of 2025. The government aims to procure a minimum of 3 million meters over the next five years.
