Aba Power Electric Ltd, Nigeria’s newest electricity distribution company, is working to secure additional natural gas supplies to increase electricity generation for nine local government areas in Abia State. The company is in talks with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Heirs Energies to increase gas supply to the 188-megawatt Geometric Power Plant.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is scheduled to perform maintenance on the critical Alaoji-Aba 132kv line from December 1 to 7. To mitigate the impact of this maintenance, Aba Power is seeking to increase gas supplies to the Geometric Power Plant. The plant currently relies on gas supplies from the NNPCL and Heirs Energies, which own Oil Mining Lease (OML) 17 in Abia State.
Engineer Cliff Eneh, an electric power consultant, noted that the planned TCN shutdown would not have a significant impact on the Aba Ringfence if there were sufficient gas supplies to the 188MW plant. Eneh commended the cooperation between Geometric Power, TCN, and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) in minimizing the impact of the maintenance work.
Aba Power aims to provide electricity to the nine local government areas under its coverage, and the increased gas supply is crucial to achieving this goal. The company is working to ensure that the maintenance work does not disrupt electricity supply to its customers.
