Adamawa State Government has announced plans to establish a peace commission to tackle farmer-herder clashes in the state. This decision comes after the successful implementation of the COMITAS project, an initiative that has reduced violent conflicts between farmers and herders over natural resources.
The COMITAS project, funded by the European Union, aimed to address conflicts between farmer and herder communities in Adamawa and Taraba States. The project has benefited 32 conflict-prone communities across 7 local government areas of Adamawa and 2 council areas in Taraba.
Key Achievements of the COMITAS Project:
- Reduced violent conflicts: The project has contributed to a reduction in violent conflicts between farmers and herders.
- Improved socio-economic activities: Socio-economic activities in conflict communities have progressed, with farmers and herders embracing modern production techniques.
- Enhanced collaboration: The project has strengthened collaboration on natural resource management, fostering trust through community dialogue.
The Adamawa State Government plans to build on the successes of the COMITAS project by establishing a peace commission. This commission will assume the structures and responsibilities of the COMITAS project, ensuring the sustainability of peacebuilding efforts in the state.
