Anambra Violence: 2 Feared Dead, Several Injured in Gun Battle Between Vigilante and Police

 

 

A tragic incident occurred in Anambra State, Nigeria, where a gun battle between local vigilante operatives and police officers resulted in the deaths of two people and injuries to several others. The incident happened at Izuchukwu Junction, along the Nnobi/Nnewi Road, on Wednesday night around 7 PM.

 

Eyewitnesses reported widespread panic, with a vehicle catching fire after stray bullets struck its fuel tank. Many initially feared it was an attack by hoodlums targeting the burial of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, scheduled to take place in Nnewi later that week.

 

According to Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the local vigilante mistook police operatives for hostile forces, leading to the gunfight. Preliminary investigations revealed security operatives were trailing a suspect to a checkpoint when the incident occurred.
