Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has shown his support for Ushie Uguamaye, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, also known as Raye, based in Lagos, who claimed she received threats after a video she posted criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s administration went viral.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Atiku commended Raye’s courage, recognizing her as a representative of a new wave of politically active women passionate about advocacy and democratic involvement.
“Raye embodies the spirit of a new generation of women who champion the ideals of popular participation and unwavering advocacy in the political sphere. I deeply admire her boldness and wisdom—her fearless resolve to speak truth to power, undeterred by the weight of opposition,” Atiku stated.
Comparing her to prominent historical Nigerian female activists like Gambo Sawaba, Funmilayo Ransom-Kuti, and Margaret Ekpo, Atiku emphasized the need for support, rather than hostility, toward her.
Raye gained attention when her TikTok video criticizing the country’s worsening economic conditions under Tinubu’s leadership went viral. She later claimed to have received threats, allegedly from NYSC officials, pressuring her to remove the video.
So far, authorities have not commented on these allegations.
