Australia is moving closer to banning kids under 16 from using social media platforms. The country’s lawmakers have passed a bill that would require platforms like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and Snapchat to take steps to prevent young teens from creating accounts.
If the bill becomes a law, social media companies that fail to comply could face massive fines of up to Aus$50 million (US$32.5 million). However, experts are skeptical about how the ban would be enforced, and some have even described it as a “knee-jerk reaction”.
The proposed ban has sparked a global debate about online safety and the challenges of regulating social media. Some countries, like China, have already implemented restrictions on social media use for minors.
