A boat conveying 15 passengers capsized along the Ukubie river, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa state, reportedly killing one person on Saturday 24, 2024
Though the cause of the accident could not be immediately ascertained, the ill-fated boat, according to a community source was sailing from Yenagoa to the Oporoma-Ukubie axis of Southern Ijaw council area when tragedy struck, Saturday afternoon.
The source said while the other passengers were rescued by some community folks, one person drowned due to swift current caused by the rising water level.
Chairman of the state Maritime workers Union, Mr Ipigansi Ogoniba, confirmed the incident.

He said fourteen passengers were rescued while one life was lost.
Spokesman of the state police command, ASP Musa Muhammed, said there was no information about the incident yet but promised to inquire and revert.
Recall that twenty lives were lost two weeks ago when a traders’ boat exploded on the Atlantic fringe of Ezetu 1 community in the same local government area.
