Thousands of residents in Maiduguri, Borno State, are struggling to cope with the devastating flood that has ravaged many communities, leaving many trapped and unable to access their workplaces, farms, or business centers. The flood has affected over one million residents, displacing more than 200,000 people who are now taking refuge in various camps.
Governor Babagana Zulum visited the displaced persons’ camps and commended the Federal Government for releasing N3 billion in flood intervention funds, which he said came in handy. He also praised the GOC 7Div, Brigadier General Abubakar Haruna, for his timely rescue mission.
However, many residents are still trapped, and some have gone without food for 48 hours. The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has rescued 719 victims, but many more remain stranded. The agency has also raised concerns about cases of snake bites in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.
In Kaduna State, a flood has cut off five villages in Lere Local Government Area, affecting the communities’ commercial activities. The state government has promised to take urgent action to address the situation.
In Kano State, the Emergency Management Agency has confirmed 49 deaths and 226 communities affected by flood and windstorm, with 6,583 houses destroyed and 38,814 persons affected.
