Catholic Priest, Two Others Freed After Four-Day Kidnapping Ordeal

 

Rev. Father Livinus Maurice, a Catholic priest, and two others have been freed after being kidnapped by gunmen in Rivers State, Nigeria.¹ The priest was abducted on Wednesday while returning from a hospital visit, along with two others whose identities have not been disclosed.

Following the abduction, the Catholic Diocese of Port Harcourt called for the priest’s unconditional release. A combined security team, including police officers, soldiers, and local vigilantes, launched a manhunt that led to the successful release of the priest and the two others on Sunday at around 6:30 am.

The victims have been reunited with their families for medical attention, and efforts are ongoing to arrest the culprits. This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly the kidnapping of clergy members and others by armed groups.
