A devastating cholera outbreak has struck Ndibokote village in Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, claiming 11 lives, including a nursing mother who left behind a 9-month-old baby.
The outbreak, which began on September 23, 2024, has also affected 20 others who are currently receiving treatment. The victims include men, women, and children.
Government Response
Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Moses Ekuma, confirmed the outbreak and reported that three treatment centers have been established in the area:
– Iziogo Health Center
– Sudan Mission
– Onuenyim and Ndibokote village
Residents are urged to seek immediate medical attention at these centers if they experience symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting.
Cause of the Outbreak
According to the Director of Public Health, Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, the outbreak was caused by open defecation, poor hygiene, and the improper burial of a woman suspected to have died from cholera. The community’s reliance on contaminated streams for drinking water has increased the risk of waterborne diseases.
Community Reaction
Community stakeholders, including Elder Stephen Nwankpuma, alerted authorities, leading to swift government intervention. However, some residents expressed frustration over the delayed response from local officials, stating that prompt action could have reduced the number of deaths.
Ongoing Efforts
The State Government, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is working to control the outbreak. The Epidemiology Unit in the Public Health Department has constituted a cholera response team to address the situation.
