A recent cholera outbreak in Sokoto State, Nigeria, has claimed 25 lives, with 1,160 reported cases in three local government areas.
The affected areas include Sokoto North, Silame, and Kware local government areas. The Commissioner for Health, Hajiya Asabe Balarabe, confirmed the outbreak and stated that rescue teams are working tirelessly to manage the situation and prevent further spread.
Efforts to Combat the Outbreak
The state government has distributed drugs free of charge to 18 local government areas as part of its intervention strategy.
Additionally, Governor Ahmad Aliyu has recruited 864 nurses and midwives to address manpower shortages in the healthcare sector.
Previous Outbreaks
This is not the first cholera outbreak in Sokoto State. In 2021, a deadly outbreak occurred, prompting UNICEF and the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid to take action.

While the Sokoto State Government initially denied reports of a cholera outbreak, they emphasized the importance of preventive measures. It is crucial for residents to take precautions to prevent the spread of cholera.
