A land dispute between communities in Oka Akoko, Akoko South West Local council area of Ondo State, Nigeria, has turned violent, resulting in the deaths of two people and injuring 10 others. The clash, which started on Sunday, also saw the destruction of several houses, including the Palace of the Asin of Oka-Odo and an event hall.
Causes of the Clash
The dispute began when members of the Owake Community installed signposts on lands along Ikun road, which was seen as an assertion of their ownership rights. However, they were ambushed by suspected thugs from the Ebo community, who allegedly mistook them for individuals from Owake.
Response from Authorities
The state police command has confirmed the incident and deployed a team to restore peace and prevent further escalation. The Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has urged the communities to seek peaceful resolutions to their disputes and assured residents that the perpetrators of violence will be brought to justice.
