Cult War Claims Multiple Lives in Edo State

A renewed cult clash in Edo State has resulted in the death of at least one person, according to the police, while a source claims the toll is eight. The violence erupted between rival groups Eiye and Vikings confraternity in Upper Sokponba.

Causes of the Clash

The clash allegedly began when leaders of the groups attempted to resolve issues in a meeting at Tipper garage in Idogbo. The meeting failed, leading to an attack by Eiye members on Vikings members, inflicting injuries but no fatalities. In retaliation, Vikings members killed a top Eiye member, escalating the violence.

Community Reactions

Two groups, Benin United Forum and Network of Civil Society Organisations, have responded to the violence:

1. Benin United Forum appealed to the Oba of Benin to invoke curses on those involved in cult-related killings, similar to his actions against human trafficking.

2. Network of Civil Society Organisations urged the police to lift the ban on vigilante groups to combat cult menace, citing the porous security situation.

Police Response

Edo State Police Command confirmed one death and stated that investigations are ongoing.
