The Nigeria Customs Service, Apapa Area Command, has banned commercial activities, including Point of Sale (PoS) operators, on its premises and related formations. This decision follows the Comptroller General of Customs Conference held in Abuja, last week.
Key Outcomes from the Conference:
- Ban on Commercial Activities: No commercial activities will be allowed within customs formations and premises.
- Officer Participation in Cargo Clearance: Officers are prohibited from participating in cargo clearance activities.
- Diligent Examination of Import/Export Cargo: 100% physical examination of import and export cargo will be conducted where necessary.
- Indiscriminate Intervention Alerts: Officers in the enforcement unit should avoid issuing alerts that create the impression of conflicting interests.
- Compulsory Medical Checks: Routine medical checks for all officers have been announced by the CGC.
Revenue Collection
The Apapa Port Command has achieved a revenue collection of N2.01 trillion as of November 19, 2024, and is on track to meet its N2.2 trillion target for the year ¹. The command contributes 40% of the total N5.07 trillion target met so far.
Encouragement to Officers
The Customs Area Controller, Babatunde Olomu, urged officers to follow the examples set by CGC Adeniyi in revenue collection, trade facilitation, uncompromising enforcement, and sustained stakeholder engagement. He emphasized maintaining high standards and ensuring seizures made from smugglers are backed with suspects for prosecution.
