DEPUTY SPEAKER KALU SEEKS INTERNATIONAL AID FOR NIGERIA’S FLOOD-HIT STATES

Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu has appealed for international assistance to tackle the humanitarian crisis caused by devastating floods in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states.

Addressing the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) of the African Union (AU) in South Africa, Kalu stated that over one million people have been displaced in one state alone.

“The floods have left tens of thousands without shelter, food, water, or access to healthcare,” Kalu said.

He emphasized the economic and infrastructural impact of the floods, citing job losses, agricultural losses, and destruction of key roads and bridges.

Kalu estimated the humanitarian response will require around $200 million.

He also highlighted the need to address bottlenecks hindering the Africa Free Trade Agreement’s (AfFTA) success.
