A 34-year-old former soldier, Anthony Emmanuel, has been apprehended by the Osun Police Command for his involvement in a string of armed robberies in Esa-Oke, Osun State.
Emmanuel, who was dismissed from the Nigerian Army in January, confessed to kidnapping a young man and forcing him to transfer N3 million into an account. He also admitted to buying military paraphernalia and wearing a fake rank.
This incident is not isolated, as there have been previous cases of dismissed soldiers and security personnel engaging in criminal activities. In May 2024, 13 individuals, including four soldiers and an NSCDC operative, were arrested in Rivers State for armed robbery and hijacking.
Additionally, three police officers were dismissed in Ogun State for alleged armed robbery and extortion in January 2024.
The Osun Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, revealed that Emmanuel and his accomplices, including another dismissed soldier, David Agbebaku, carried out their operations while dressed in military uniforms.
They robbed victims of iPhones valued at N1.25 million and forced them to transfer money into their accounts.
Emmanuel’s arrest was made possible by the anti-kidnapping squad of the Osun Police Command. David Agbebaku was already arrested in Oyo State for another offense.
