Approximately 63 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from the Home for the Needy Foundation (IDP) camp in Uhorgua, Edo, may be barred from taking their semester exams at the Niger Delta University, Oghara, due to unpaid fees. The institution is owed N116.3 million for the sponsorship of the IDPs, with only N7.5 million paid since March 2024.
The Niger Delta University authorities have stated that the outstanding debt poses a significant challenge to the university’s operations. As a result, management has decided to take drastic action to recover the debt, including preventing the IDPs from sitting for their exams until the debt is settled.
The Coordinator of the camp, Mr. Solomon Folorunsho, has appealed to kind-hearted Nigerians and corporate organizations to assist in offsetting the bill. He emphasized that about 60 of the IDPs are in their 400 and 500 levels and that allowing them to drop out at this stage would be a waste of the years they have already spent in school.
