Edo State Local Government Crisis Escalates

The crisis in Edo State’s local government areas has intensified, with councillors impeaching the chairmen of Uhunmwonde, Orhionmwon, and Owan East local government areas. However, the Owan East LGA Chair, Aminu Okodo-Kadiri, has disputed the impeachment, calling it unconstitutional and illegal ¹.

Key Developments:

  1. Impeachment Controversy: Okodo-Kadiri claimed that the impeachment process was flawed, citing the use of an unofficial mace and the participation of suspended councillors.
  2.  Allegations of Financial Mismanagement: The Edo State government alleged that council chairmen embezzled N50m meant for salaries. However, Okodo-Kadiri denied these claims, stating that salaries were paid promptly up to November.
  3. Violence and Protests: The impeachment was marked by violence, with several people injured in Uhunmwonde when gunmen allegedly attacked bystanders.
  4. Political Tensions: The crisis is linked to the suspension of 18 LGA chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly, which the chairmen and opposition parties have described as illegal.
