The Enugu State Government has summoned traditional rulers and President-Generals of communities in Nsukka to discuss the recent attacks by “Oriokpa” masqueraders that resulted in two fatalities. The government has also directed a full-scale investigation into the activities of these masquerade groups, vowing to bring the perpetrators to book.
According to Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, the government received reports on the untoward activities of Oriokpa masqueraders in some parts of Nsukka Council Area. These reports detailed incidents of pandemonium, bodily harm, and fatalities.
The attacks are part of a history of alleged misconduct by the Oriokpa masquerades. In April, they were involved in a widely condemned attack on a female nurse. More recently, hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona community in Nsukka Council Area took to the streets on September 19 to protest against the constant attacks and harassment by masquerades.
Ogbodo stated that Governor Peter Mbah directed the Commissioner of Police to immediately institute a full-scale investigation into the incidents, including the reported fatalities. The investigation aims to bring whoever is culpable to book.
The commissioner commiserated with families of those who lost their lives in circumstances connected with the activities of the masquerades. He warned that the government will not condone any further excesses by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group, ensuring the rights and security of citizens are guaranteed at all times.
“Our people should never be made to live in fear,” Ogbodo added. “Consequently, any such excesses by the Oriokpa masqueraders or any group for that matter will be met with commensurate sanctions by the government.”
