Federal Government Begins Payment of N70,000 Minimum Wage

 

The Federal Government has commenced payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage to over 1.2 million civil servants across all levels of the federal civil service.

 

 

According to documents obtained from the National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission, the new salary structure takes effect from September 2024. The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr. Oluwatoyin Madein, confirmed the development in a warrant addressed to the Budget Office of the Federation.

 

 

New Salary Breakdown

– Level 1 officers: N930,000 per annum

– Level 2 officers: N934,160 per annum

– Level 3 officers: N937,713 per annum

– Level 4 officers: N950,243 per annum

– Level 5 officers: N973,123 per annum

– Level 6 officers: N1,041,786 per annum

– Level 7 officers: N1,277,667 per annum

– Level 8 officers: N1,479,276 per annum

– Level 9 officers: N1,641,226 per annum

– Level 10 officers: N1,806,041 per annum

– Level 12 officers: N2,007,152 per annum

– Level 13 officers: N2,182,637 per annum

– Level 15 officers: N2,358,936 per annum

– Level 16 officers: N3,611,689 per annum

– Level 17 officers (Permanent Secretary): N6,918,560 per annum

 

 

Reactions

Organized labour has welcomed the development, urging private sector employers to follow suit. However, some stakeholders have expressed concerns about the economic implications and potential difficulties for small businesses to comply.

 

 

The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA) criticized the threat of imprisonment for defaulters, advocating for engagement and support for struggling businesses instead.

 

 

Annual Wage Bill

The Federal Government will spend N4.019 trillion annually on the new wage bill, with N334.925 billion allocated for monthly payments.

 

Implementation

The implementation of the new minimum wage follows President Bola Tinubu’s signing of the law on July 29, 2024, after negotiations with labor leaders.
