Background
In 2019, the government imposed a total ban on mining in Zamfara State due to security concerns. The state was also declared a “no-fly zone” in 2021.
Reasons for Lifting the Ban
According to Dele Alake, the Minister of Solid Minerals’ special assistant on media, the president and national security adviser evaluated the security situation and granted approval to restart mining exploration.
Economic Benefits
The government expects the resumption of mining activities to reawaken economic activities in the state, which is rich in gold, lithium, and copper.
