Federal Government Warns of Imminent Flooding in Niger Delta, Southern States

The Federal Government has issued a warning to the Niger Delta and southern states to prepare for possible flooding due to rising water levels.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engineer Joseph Utsev, attributed the recent devastating Maiduguri flood to the overflow of the Ngadda River, not a collapse of the Alau Dam as initially speculated.

Utsev explained that the flood resulted from massive inflows from the Ngadda River, which overwhelmed the dam’s dyke. He assured that the Alau Dam would be prioritized for a thorough overhaul and upgrade, and any poor performance by contractors or officials involved would not go unpunished.

The minister also warned that the water people drink may be contaminated, and emergency measures should be activated to mitigate the impact of the looming flood disaster in the southern part of the country. He urged increased vigilance and proactive measures to address any eventual flooding events in the southern region.
