The Federal Government of Nigeria has increased the daily feeding allowance for inmates in its prisons from N750 to N1,125. This change aims to address the negative impact of rising inflation on inmate feeding.
According to Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, the Acting Controller General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, the increased allowance is part of efforts to improve the welfare of inmates. Nwakuche also emphasized the need for speedy prosecution of the 48,932 awaiting trial inmates to decongest prisons.
Key Highlights of the Increased Allowance:
- Daily Feeding Allowance: Increased from N750 to N1,125 per inmate per day.
- Monitoring: Monitoring teams from the national headquarters will oversee inmate feeding.
- Welfare Priority: Inmate welfare will be a top priority, including expanding classrooms and vocational skills centers.
- Vulnerable Persons: Special care will be given to vulnerable persons in prisons, such as pregnant women, babies, and the physically challenged.
