The Nigerian government has issued a warning to citizens to immediately relocate from flood-prone areas due to the release of water from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam into Rivers Niger and Benue.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) listed 11 states at risk of flooding, including Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross Rivers, and Rivers.
NIHSA Director General, Umar Mohammed, warned that the water release would cause flooding, especially in areas near riverbanks.
MAIDUGURI FLOODS: RESIDENTS DECRY EXPLOITATION BY CANOE OPERATORS
“We have agreed with Cameroonian authorities to release water intermittently to avoid flooding,” Mohammed said.
He advised residents to clear drainages around their homes and move to safer locations.
The warning comes after devastating floods in Maiduguri, Borno State, killed over 30 people and destroyed thousands of homes.
