The Nigerian government has issued a high-level flood warning to communities along the Rivers Benue and Niger, citing rising water levels due to persistent rainfall.
Critical Flood Thresholds Reached
According to the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), water levels in the River Benue have exceeded 9 meters between October 9 and 15, with Makurdi, Lokoja, and other stations nearing flood thresholds.
Evacuation Urged
NIHSA’s Director General, Umar Mohammed, warned residents near riverbanks to evacuate immediately, citing dangers posed by the rising waters.
Key Flood-Prone Areas:
- River Benue (Makurdi, Lokoja, Umaisha, Ibbi)
- River Niger (Kainji and Jebba Dams)
Preventative Measures
– The management of Kainji and Jebba Dams is closely monitoring and controlling water releases to prevent downstream flooding.
