A devastating fire outbreak occurred at a spare parts market in the Idumota area of Lagos State, destroying property worth millions of naira. The incident happened on Friday night, and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) responded to the distress calls, activating its emergency response teams.
According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, multiple buildings used as shops for car spare parts were razed, but no casualties were recorded, and no injuries were sustained. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire and recover properties.
The LASEMA Response Teams, including the Shark Response Team, Fire Unit, and Tiger Response Team, worked together with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and the Federal Fire Service to curtail the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent buildings.
Oke-Osanyintolu stated that “dampening down” has commenced to stamp out the remaining pockets of fire, and salvage of valuable properties in the recovered shops is ongoing. He added that efforts are ongoing to completely extinguish the fire, and recovery operations are still ongoing.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of traders and customers at the market. The Lagos State Government has been urged to take immediate action to provide support to the affected traders and to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
