In a bold move, 40 fishermen in Yauri, Kebbi State, have killed a rogue hippopotamus responsible for the deaths of two people, including the Emir of Yauri’s guard.
Vengeance for the Community
The fishermen, armed with bows and arrows, took matters into their own hands after receiving a directive from the Emir of Yauri to eliminate the deadly animal. The hippopotamus had been terrorizing the community, killing Malam Usman Maigadi, the Emir’s guard, and a farmer.
Justice Served
“We can’t keep an animal that’s killing people anyhow,” said Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, Chairman of Yauri Local Government Area. “The brave fishermen have saved our community from further harm.”
Community Celebration
After killing the hippopotamus, the fishermen transported its carcass to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, where it was butchered and shared among the community.

This incident highlights the growing concern of wildlife conflict in Nigeria, where humans and animals increasingly intersect.
