The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) has issued a high-level flood alert, warning of imminent danger as the water levels of Rivers Niger and Benue have reached critical points.
Director General Umar Mohammed urged Nigerians and state governments to take immediate action to mitigate the impact of the devastating floods, which have been exacerbated by prolonged rainfall across the nation.
“The steady rise in the water levels of Rivers Niger and Benue has gotten to the red mark,” Mohammed said in a statement. “We advise citizens along river banks to relocate to safe locations and secure their lives and property.”
NIHSA recommended the following measures to prevent further flooding:
– Clearing drainages and gutters
– Making way for water runoff
– Relocating to safe locations for citizens along river banks
The agency will continue to monitor the water levels of major rivers and tributaries, issuing flood warnings and alerts, including flood predictions.
NIHSA is working closely with emergency response agencies and the media to help save lives and property.
