The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a flood alert, warning 12 states of imminent flooding due to expected moderate to heavy rainfall starting September 20, 2024.
In a statement released yesterday, NiMet listed the affected states as Borno, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi, Edo, Delta, Anambra, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Rivers.
According to NiMet, the flooding is anticipated due to the release of water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, coupled with saturated soil moisture and expected moderate to heavy rainfall.

Residents in flood-prone areas have been advised to take necessary precautions, including:
– Preparing for evacuation
– Stocking up on essential supplies
– Relocating valuable belongings and livestock to safer locations
– Avoiding crossing or driving through flooded areas
– Fortifying structures where possible
This warning comes on the heels of severe flash flooding in Borno State, which has affected over 414,000 people and claimed 37 lives.
