Ibadan, Nigeria – A devastating flood swept through the Joyce-B/Mobil area of Ibadan on Tuesday evening, claiming one life and leaving two people missing.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the casualties while assessing the damage.
NEMA South-West Coordinator, Kadir Olanrewaju, attributed the flooding to poor drainage channelization, stating that the area’s drainage system was overwhelmed by the heavy rainfall.
Residents described the destruction as catastrophic, with homes and businesses severely affected.
“I lost everything on the ground floor,” said Mr. Solomon Agboro, a resident whose building was flooded. “The government needs to help us with proper drainage.”
Oni Bishola, another resident, echoed Agboro’s sentiments, adding that this year’s flooding was the worst in four years.
Other affected areas include:
– Felele area
– Idi-Odo junction
– Ring Road area
The fence of a building under construction near Calvary Heritage School collapsed due to flooding, and FCMB’s front area was inundated, disrupting traffic.
NEMA warns that the area is prone to flash flooding and urges residents to relocate.
