Flood Devastation in Kano: 49 Dead, 226 Communities Affected

 

The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that 49 people have lost their lives and 226 communities have been affected by flood and windstorm in 27 Local Government Areas of the state since January 2024. The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Alhaji Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, disclosed this information during a press briefing in Kano.

The affected areas include Tudun Wada, Gwale, Wudil, Danbatta, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, Madobi, Bichi, Kano Municipal, Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, Rogo, Shanono, Kabo, Garin Malam, and Ungogo, among others. The flood has destroyed 6,583 houses, affected 38,814 persons, and displaced 1,414 individuals. Additionally, 139 people were injured, and 8,289 farmlands equivalent to 36,265 hectares were destroyed.

SEMA has responded by visiting the affected areas, distributing relief materials, and organizing workshops to address environmental hazards.

The agency has commended Governor Abba Yusuf for his support and urged residents to clear drainage systems to prevent further flooding. SEMA has also called on wealthy individuals to support flood victims with relief materials.
