FLOOD VICTIMS PROTEST IN MAIDUGURI OVER LACK OF AID

 

Displaced flood victims took to the streets of Maiduguri, Borno State, protesting the scarcity of food and relief materials following the devastating September 9 flood.

 

The catastrophic flood displaced over 1 million residents and destroyed critical infrastructure, leaving many without access to basic necessities.

 

Protesters from the Baga Road area blocked traffic, expressing frustration over the perceived neglect in relief assistance. Commissioner of Police, CP Mohammed Lawal Yusufu, intervened, urging calm and patience.

According to Yusufu, relief efforts are underway, including:

Token cards for government-distributed palliatives

Collaborative efforts between the Borno State Government and humanitarian organizations to provide food, shelter, and clean water

Evacuation of approximately 50,000 people to temporary shelters

 

The United Nations reports that 4.8 million people in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe states face a severe food and nutrition crisis.
