The usually tranquil streets of Langtang South Local Government Area were transformed into raging rivers over the weekend, leaving a trail of devastation and despair in their wake. A relentless downpour that began on Friday and persisted through Sunday unleashed a catastrophic flood, displacing over 80 households and shattering the lives of hundreds.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before,” said Nandul Solomon, a resident of Angwan Bwarat in Sabon Gida community. “The flood didn’t claim lives, but it’s left us with nothing. We’re struggling to find shelter, food, and safety.”
As the floodwaters receded, revealing the full extent of the damage, residents and authorities alike were left reeling. Homes were submerged, belongings destroyed, and livelihoods lost. The once-thriving community was now a scene of utter desolation.
“We appeal to the government and relevant authorities to come to our aid,” pleaded Yintim Yohanna Nimilam, Development Secretary of Sabon Gida. “We need help to rebuild our lives.”
In a gesture of solidarity, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang donated N180 million worth of relief materials to flood victims in Borno State. Meanwhile, the Kwara State Government warned riverine communities to relocate to higher grounds, and Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji cautioned developers against building on waterways.
As the people of Langtang South struggle to come to terms with their loss, the question on everyone’s mind is: what next? Will the government’s efforts be enough to mitigate the effects of the flood, or will this community be forever changed by the raging waters?
