Floodwaters Recede in Maiduguri, Residents Return Home to Assess Damage

Residents of Maiduguri, who were displaced by flooding from the Alau Dam, are gradually returning to their homes as the water recedes. Many flood victims, who spent nights outdoors, are now assessing the damage to their properties and salvaging what they can.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), over 239,000 people were affected by the flood, with some forced to move to the Muna IDP camp, which already hosted over 50,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs). Government authorities have evacuated residents in high-risk areas to safer locations.

The flood incident has disrupted communication, power, and water supply in most parts of the town, causing significant hardship for residents. As residents return home, they face the daunting task of rebuilding and recovering from the devastating effects of the flood.
