Food Prices in Lagos: Pepper Up 100%, Egusi Leaps Amidst Mixed Market Signals

 

A recent market survey conducted by Nairametrics in four key markets in Lagos (Mushin, Daleko, Oyingbo, and Mile 12) reveals a mixed pricing environment for food items.

While prices of some staple foods like rice, vegetable oil, onion, tomato, and wheat meal have eased slightly, others like pepper, frozen foods, egusi, and ogbono have increased.

 

Key Price Increases:

  • Pepper: A medium bag of pepper rose by 132.14% to N65,000, while a big bag increased by 50% to N75,000.
  • Frozen Foods: Titus fish increased by 87.5% to N6,000, while Kote fish rose by 40.63%.
  • Egusi: A bag of egusi increased by 24.51% to N300,000-N320,000.

 

Key Price Reductions:

  • Palm Oil: A 5-liter keg decreased by 25.6% to N9,300.
  • Vegetable Oil: A 5-liter keg dropped by 19.35% to N12,500.
  • Rice: A 50kg bag of Cap parboiled rice decreased by 12.82% to N68,000.
