A fuel tanker exploded in Maitama, Abuja, on Monday night, leaving multiple people injured and causing widespread panic.
According to eyewitnesses, the tanker truck tipped over along Shehu Shagari Way before erupting in a massive fireball.
“It was like a bomb went off,” said one witness. “People were screaming and running for their lives.”
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, evacuating the injured to nearby hospitals.
“We received multiple patients with severe burns and injuries,” said a hospital spokesperson.
The driver of the tanker is believed to have fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.
The explosion also caused significant traffic congestion in the area, disrupting movement in the busy part of the federal capital city.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the incident.
“We are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the explosion,” said a spokesperson for the Abuja Emergency Management Agency.
The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the transportation of hazardous materials in the nation’s capital.
