The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Akwa Ibom State has rescued a 12-year-old girl, Bright Sunday, who was locked up in a dilapidated building by her father and stepmother for two years.
The State Commandant of NSCDC, Mr. Eluyemi Eluwade, disclosed that the victim was subjected to inhumane treatment, including denial of food, bathing, and education, and was consistently beaten by her stepmother.
The suspects, Ndifreke Sunday and his wife, Victory Sunday, were arrested for child deprivation and abuse under the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law 2020.
The victim will be handed over to a Gender-Based Violence Shelter Home for care and rehabilitation. The NSCDC has condemned the act as barbaric, callous, and heinous, and warned parents to desist from such acts.
The suspects will be handed over to the appropriate prosecuting agency for necessary action. The rescue and arrest were made possible by a complaint from the State Ministry of Justice.
