Governors from across Nigeria have come together to support the victims of the devastating flooding in Maiduguri and Jere in Borno State. The flooding, which has shown no signs of receding, has left entire communities submerged underwater, displacing over half a million people and affecting over a million.
The governors, led by Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, inspected the affected areas and pledged food support to the victims. They commended the Federal Government and Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum for their swift response to the crisis.
The flooding, caused by the collapse of the Alau Dam water channels, has submerged residential quarters, offices, roads, and bridges, with at least 40% of farmland washed away and crops destroyed. The National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI) has warned of likely food insecurity and promised to send food and non-food items to victims.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that 1,048,312 people have been affected by flooding nationwide, with 625,239 displaced and 259 lives lost. The agency activated Internally Displaced Persons camps in some states to manage the impact of the flooding.
