Gunmen have abducted three relatives of a former Daily Trust Editor, Ahmed Ajobe, in Kogi State, demanding a ransom of N50 million. The victims, including Ajobe’s younger sister, Halimtu-Sadiya Tahir, were kidnapped on their way back from a market in Awo, Ankpa Local Government Area.
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, when the victims were returning from the market. The kidnappers, who were armed, blocked their path and took them away.
A family friend, who preferred anonymity, revealed that the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N50 million for the release of the victims. The friend also stated that the family is currently negotiating with the kidnappers, but no amount has been paid yet.
The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident, with the Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, stating that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area has deployed his men to ensure the rescue of the victims. The Police Commissioner, Bethrand Onuoha, has also ordered the drafting of the police tactical team to the area to reinforce the team there.
The incident has caused concern among the family and friends of the victims, who are calling for their safe release. The kidnapping has also highlighted the growing insecurity in Kogi State, with many calling for increased efforts to tackle the menace.
