A violent incident occurred on Saturday during the Ijaw Youth Council election in the Abuloma area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leaving two individuals feared dead.
The election, which was organized by the IYC central zone to elect new executives, was disrupted when gunmen stormed the venue and opened fire indiscriminately.
Members of the council fled for safety, and two unidentified individuals were reportedly struck by stray bullets. The election was abruptly halted.
The Rivers State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the gunmen involved in the invasion. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, condemned the shooting as “senseless” and stated that the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, had dispatched tactical units to the scene.
Although the police did not confirm any casualties, Iringe-Koko stated that investigations were ongoing and that normalcy had returned to the area. Residents have been urged to report any suspicious activity to the police.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Rivers State and the need for increased measures to ensure public safety during public events.
