As the Harmattan season hits Kano, second-hand clothing dealers, popularly known as Yan’gwanjo, are experiencing a surge in sales. People are flocking to markets to purchase warm clothing, blankets, and head warmers to protect themselves from the cold weather.
Dealers in various markets, including Kofar-Wambai, Sabon-Gari, Farm Center, and Yankaba, have reported increased demand for their products. Many have even set up temporary markets and makeshift shops to cater to the growing demand.
Musa Saleh, a dealer at Kofar-Wambai, stated that he earns close to N30,000 or more from sales, with customers often begging him to inform them when he opens new bales. Similarly, Mrs. Alice John, a dealer at Sabon-Gari market, confirmed that her patronage has doubled since the start of the cold weather.
However, some customers have expressed concerns over the rising prices of second-hand clothes. Aisha Abubakar, a shopper at Kofar-Wambai market, lamented that the prices are much higher compared to last year.
Bala Yakasai, a civil servant, also claimed that sellers are taking advantage of the high demand to increase prices.
