A devastating wave of violence has swept through Benue State, Nigeria, as armed herdsmen have killed 37 members of the Benue Motorcycle Association and stolen 69 motorbikes in just eight weeks . The attacks, which occurred on the Makurdi-Naka Federal Highway, have sparked widespread outrage and fear among the local community.
Protesters, comprising members of the association and the National Union Road Transport Workers, took to the streets to demand government action, bearing placards that read “Stop the killings of our members” and “Government, please come to our aid”. The protesters are calling for improved security measures, including the deployment of more security personnel to the area and the repair of the highway to reduce attacks.
Key Demands:
- Improved Security: Deployment of more security personnel to the Makurdi-Naka Federal Highway
- Road Repair: Repair of the highway to reduce attacks
- Government Intervention: Decisive action to end the menace of armed herdsmen
The chairman of the Benue Motorcycle Association, Mathew Kwaghza, lamented that the attacks have resulted in the loss of 37 lives and 69 motorbikes, which is a significant blow to the livelihoods of the affected families . The National Union Road Transport Workers has also directed its members to use alternative routes, citing the dangers posed by the armed herdsmen.
This surge in violence has raised concerns about the safety and security of residents in Benue State, particularly those who rely on the highway for their daily activities. The government’s response to the crisis will be crucial in restoring peace and stability to the region.
