Imo Inter-Cult Clash Claims Eight Lives

A violent clash between rival cult groups in Imo State’s Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area has resulted in the deaths of at least eight people. The affected communities are Awarra and Ochia.

According to a community leader who wished to remain anonymous, the clash was part of a long-standing struggle for control over proceeds from oil companies operating in the area. The leader expressed frustration over the state government’s inability to provide adequate security, forcing residents to flee their homes.

The community leader reported that five of the deceased were cult members, while three residents died from shock after hearing gunfire. An additional person remains missing after being abducted.

The leader appealed to the Nigeria Police and Imo State Government to intervene, ensuring the safe return of displaced residents who have taken refuge in neighboring communities. Many have sought shelter in churches in areas such as Assa, Obile, Obosima, and Umuokanne.

A youth leader, who also wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that the clash was a supremacy battle between two groups vying for control over oil company proceeds. The groups are reportedly led by individuals known as Acid and Achis.

Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Henry Okoye, acknowledged receipt of complaints about attacks by criminal elements in the area. He assured that the police are collaborating with stakeholders to restore peace and have made several arrests.

To address the crisis, the communities have established a committee to develop measures for lasting peace. Normalcy has reportedly been restored following government intervention, but concerns persist about the economic hardship faced by displaced residents.

The police commissioner has engaged in meetings with local stakeholders and visited Ohaji to assess the situation. Okoye emphasized the importance of community cooperation in maintaining peace, stating that the security of Ohaji depends on the active involvement of its residents.
