Irregular Migration on the Rise in Nigeria: Experts Call for Action — NIS

Nigeria’s Immigration Service has raised concerns about the increasing number of irregular migrants entering the country. Martins Moye, Controller of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Edo State, sounded the alarm at the 2024 NIS enlightenment campaign against irregular migration, citing the “rising numbers of irregular migration” as the reason for the program.

The campaign, themed ‘Say No to Migrants Smuggling..If You Must Migrate, Migrate Safely, Orderly and Regularly’, aimed to educate the public about the dangers of irregular migration. David Amanahu, Assistant Controller of Immigration, noted that Edo State was chosen for the campaign due to its history of irregular migration, but highlighted that it’s no longer the top state for this issue.

Some of the dangers of irregular migration mentioned during the campaign include:

Loss of Life: Irregular migrants risk losing their lives during the migration process.

Human Trafficking: Migrants may be subjected to human trafficking and exploitation.

Organ Harvesting: There’s a risk of organ harvesting, which is a severe human rights abuse.

Freedom Restriction: Irregular migrants may have their freedom restricted or taken away.

The Nigerian Immigration Service urges the public to be aware of these dangers and to migrate safely and regularly.
