Jigawa Fuel Tanker Explosion: Death Toll Rises to 168, Survivor Recounts Harrowing Experience

 

A devastating fuel tanker explosion in Jigawa State, Nigeria, has claimed the lives of 168 people, with over 100 others injured and receiving treatment in various hospitals.

 

Survivor’s Ordeal

Sabitu Yahaya, one of the survivors, shared his traumatic experience, recounting how he narrowly escaped death but suffered severe burns. Tragically, he lost two siblings in the explosion.

 

“I was searching for my younger ones when the explosion occurred,” Yahaya said. “I got burned from my knees down to my legs. In my family, we lost two while three of us are hospitalized.”

 

Government Response

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to investigate the causes of the explosion. A presidential delegation, led by Senator George Akume, visited Jigawa to condole with the government and people of the state.

 

“The President is saddened by the incident and has assured support for the victims,” Akume said. “Those found wanting in carrying out their responsibility will not be spared.”
