LAGDO DAM WATER RELEASE: NIGERIA ON HIGH ALERT FOR FLOODING

The Nigerian government has warned of potential flooding due to the controlled water release from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam, which began on September 17, 2024.

According to reports, the water discharge is expected to escalate to 1000m³/s over the next seven days, depending on the inflow from the Garoua River.

The Lagdo Dam, located in Cameroon’s Northern Province, was constructed between 1977 and 1982. Initially, Cameroon and Nigeria planned to build two dams: Lagdo Dam and Dasin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State. However, the absence of Dasin Hausa Dam has led to severe consequences for Nigerian states

The water release has already caused devastating floods in Borno State, resulting in over 30 deaths and affecting over a million citizens. The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has warned that Kogi, Edo, Borno, Bayelsa, and eight other states are prone to flooding in the coming days.

The federal government has alerted Nigerians to the potential flooding and advised citizens to take necessary precautions.
