The Lagos State Police Command has clarified that a viral video showing a man being manhandled by police officers was not due to his dreadlocks, but rather his alleged possession of illegal drugs. According to CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the command’s spokesperson, the suspect was arrested at Bassey Street in the Egbeda area of Lagos State after residents complained about young men openly abusing and selling drugs.

The video had sparked outrage on social media, with a voice claiming that the man was apprehended and assaulted for having dreadlocks and looking like a fraudster. However, Hundeyin dismissed this claim as “false, misleading, and malicious.” He explained that the police responded to the complaints and found the young man with hard drugs. Due to his resistance and struggle, minimal force was used to subdue him.
The suspect, along with others arrested, will be prosecuted accordingly. This incident highlights the importance of verifying information before sharing it on social media to avoid spreading misinformation.
