Lagos Residents, Traders Express Concerns Over Proposed Ban on Single-Use Plastics, Sachet Water

The Lagos State Government’s plan to ban single-use plastics and sachet water from January 2025 has sparked widespread concerns among residents and traders, who fear the move will lead to job losses and increased unemployment.

Traders Speak Out

– “Selling pure water helps me feed my children and send them to school. Bottled water is too expensive to buy or sell in bulk,” said Mummy Boma, a street vendor.

– “What will be the next step of the government? The only thing I’m seeing is more unemployment,” added Joy Okafor, a retailer.

Expert Insights

Dr. Olufemi Adeyemi, a medical doctor, cautioned that banning sachet water without providing alternative safe water sources could leave millions without a reliable and affordable water option.

Proposed Solutions

– Phased reduction of sachet water use

– Investing in public water systems

– Education and waste management initiatives

Government’s Goal

The ban aims to address environmental concerns, particularly the blocking of drainage systems and pollution.

Resident Reactions

– “The government should look for a means to curb the problem by disposing of it and not banning it.”

– “The government should provide clean piped water for streets and houses.”

As the government moves forward with the ban, residents and traders await clarity on alternative solutions and support for those affected.
